CREATE HIGH-KEY AND LOW-KEY LIGHTING

The way you use a single studio light can completely change the mood and overall feel of your portrait, and mastering both high-key and low-key effects can really help your work have a professional, high-end feel. Creating a high-key or low-key portrait is a good way of ensuring that the focus is on the subject. A high-key image is generally dominated by highlights and sometimes errs on the side of overexposure, whereas a low-key image mainly consists of shadows and lowlights. Low-key images are usually highly dramatic and can be used to create a more mysterious or sensual image, whereas high-key shots are vibrant and engaging. The challenge with creating a high-key portrait with one light is that this style typically demands that there is lots of light. Two lights…

Foraging fungi 101

Foraging fungi 101

Fungi have come out from the gloom and starting to get the credit for the amazing life forms that they are. Part of this is an increased desire to forage and eat them. A noble goal. But imagine you went to someone’s garden in an environment you were unfamiliar with, and didn’t recognize the plants. Every time you saw a new one, you asked: “Is this edible?” It would soon tire the host. Well, there are likely more fungi species in New Zealand than plant species. Just as edible plants are a minority, so are edible fungi. The good news is that in urban or highly-modified environments there are likely more opportunities for foraging for the beginner than in indigenous forests. Identification is very important, but one can start with…

01 Surfing Waikiki HAWAII The beauty of the Hawaiian Islands is beyond comparison; there is such a serene, relaxing energy there. I visit as often as I can to breathe the fresh air, recharge and reconnect. Hawaii really embodies the same spirit I try to evoke in my work—to make every day a getaway. 02 Bixby Bridge BIG SUR, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA The ultimate road trip along California’s Pacific Coast Highway must include a drive through Big Sur National Park. There is a celestial energy along the coastline near Bixby Bridge that is contagious and provides long-lasting memories for all who visit. 03 Charlevoix Channel Ferry MICHIGAN I grew up spending my summers on Lake Michigan and have a lifelong connection to the Midwest. THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CUSTOMISING YOUR HOME SCREEN

Who needs defaults? One of the best things about iOS is how much customisation it gives you over how your Home Screen and Lock Screen look and feel. Your iPhone’s built-in features go way beyond simply changing your wallpaper and calling it a day. Take a look under the hood and you’ll find that iOS lets you change far more than you thought was possible. For example, in iOS 16 you can place small widgets on your iPhone’s Lock Screen that show your activity rings, upcoming reminders, and much more. There are toggles to change Lock Screen fonts, wallpaper colours, gradients and effects, and even add wallpapers that sparkle with beautiful animated effects or show the weather in real time. That’s not all. You can also create custom Home Screens…

5. Everyone Suffers from Impostor Syndrome—Here’s How to Handle It

ONE OF THE greatest barriers to moving outside your comfort zone is the fear that you’re a poser, you’re not worthy, and you couldn’t possibly be qualified to do whatever you’re aiming to do. It’s a fear that strikes many of us: impostor syndrome. I know I’ve certainly had those thoughts while publishing pieces of writing, whether they are blogs or books. I’ve had them while teaching my first university classes and giving speeches to corporate audiences. I appear confident on the outside but feel deeply insecure on the inside, wondering who I am to be stepping up to this stage. What could I possibly have to say that anyone would want to hear? And I’m not alone. Actress (and Harvard alum) Natalie Portman described the self-doubt she experienced as a Harvard…

Does baking soda enhance cycling performance?

Does baking soda enhance cycling performance?

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate (often abbreviated to bicarb), has been investigated for its potential to improve exercise performance since 1930. The early pioneering work at Harvard University observed improved exercise tolerance when ingested orally. In the 1980s, research focused on cycling performance, leading to bicarb’s widespread use in road and track racing. Given that the performance benefits have been widely known for decades, why is there renewed research and media interest in this supplement? “It could be useful for long bouts of exercise” This may well be due to the Swedish nutrition company Maurten releasing its new “bicarb system” earlier this year. Elite riders and teams such as Jumbo-Visma, Intermarché-Circus-Wanty and Team SD Worx have been using the product, prompting speculation that bicarb could be the not-sosecret ingredient accounting for Jumbo’s…

Paul Walker’s daughter ‘KEEPING DAD’S LEGACY ALIVE’

Paul Walker’s daughter, Meadow, is honouring her dad in the most beautiful way, some 10 years after the actor tragically died in a car crash, aged 40. In a full-circle moment, Meadow is making a cameo appearance as a flight attendant in Fast X, the latest movie in the Fast & Furious franchise. Paul, of course, played Brian O’Conner in the popular films before his death on November 30, 2013. Taking to Instagram to share the exciting news, Meadow, 24, explained that “the first Fast was released when I was 1 year old”, and added she “grew up on set” watching her dad work alongside the likes of Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges. “I am so blessed to be able to honour my father’s legacy and share this…

Budget-friendly, beautiful and the land of smiles, Thailand tops the list as a holiday destination that blends beach time with ancient history and water blessings. Ancient Ayutthaya A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ayutthaya is about an hour and a half by train from Bangkok. It was the second capital of Siam and once home to 400 glittering temples. Its golden era ended when the Burmese sacked the city in 1767. Today you can visit the remaining ruins which can be found within the heart of the city and reimagine its former splendour. Entry to most wats (temples) is $2.50 and some are free. Top wats to visit: Wat Mahathat – Best-known for the head of a Buddha statue entwined in the roots of a tree, Wat Mahathat was built in…

On the Sunny Side of the Street

WHEN YOUR NEIGHBORS INCLUDE SAN Francisco’s famous Painted Ladies, known by millennials as the Full House houses, the siren call of bold color is impossible to ignore. In steering the refresh of a 1900 Victorian down the road, Kelly Finley, principal of Joy Street Design, heard it loud and clear. “Our motto is no white kitchens,” says the designer, who splits her time between Oakland, California, and Atlanta. “Color is joy! Color is life!” Originally, Finley’s team was only supposed to work on the home’s new addition. But an unusually strong storm blew the tarp off the structure mid-renovation, ruining many of the elements the young family of four had hoped to keep. It was undeniably a setback, but one that allowed Finley to go all-in on creating a unified home…

SILK ROAD DETOUR

At a site on the edge of southern Israel’s Arava Desert, archaeologists have unearthed a trash heap packed with an unprecedented quantity of discarded merchandise of the sort that was once traded along the medieval Silk Road. The site, called Nahal Omer, was a way station a day’s walk west of the city of Petra, in present-day Jordan. In two dig seasons there, University of Haifa archaeologist Guy Bar-Oz and his team have excavated cotton and silk fabric and other organic remains such as papyrus fragments and cotton ear swabs that came from India and China. To the team’s surprise, the textiles were radiocarbon dated to the seventh and eighth centuries A.D.—at least 300 years after the Roman-era route had largely fallen into disuse. This was a time of growing…

How food retail can FLEX

How food retail can FLEX

The pandemic prompted major shifts across retail, serving as a crash course in designing for uncertain times. Perhaps one of the most notable changes has been the creation of flexible shop floors that can be rearranged or reinvented with relative ease and speed. While we’ve seen a move towards multifunctionality across a range of store concepts, supermarkets and food retailers are now trialling changeable spaces, too. This is in part because of the staggering growth of digital grocery – a market expected to reach a value of €223 billion by 2025 in the US alone, according to Insider Intelligence. As grocers grapple with the changing landscapes of commerce and consumer behaviour, remaining agile is allowing them to respond with new offerings and points of difference. STORES DESIGNED TO FLEX With their Flexstore model,…

DO YOU KNOW YOUR WATER FOOTPRINT?

DO YOU KNOW YOUR WATER FOOTPRINT?

From space, Earth looks like a planet overflowing with water. But only about 0.007 percent is fresh and usable, and even that amount is under threat. Whether for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing clothes, or other basic tasks, the average American uses around 80 gallons of water a day—but that’s just a fraction of their total usage. There’s an additional 2,000 gallons “hidden” in what one consumes on a daily basis. It may be strange to think about the water we use yet can’t see. Scientists have made that hidden number visible by calculating what is known as a water footprint. Consider one tomato. Its carbon footprint measures how many pounds of planet-warming gas are added to the atmosphere to grow, wash, pack, and deliver the tomato to you; its water footprint tells…

Your Travel Destination Has Been Hit with Serious Trouble. Should You Still Visit?

Your Travel Destination Has Been Hit with Serious Trouble. Should You Still Visit?

DURING A TRIP to Nicaragua in September of 2019, I saw the words PRAY FOR SURFERS graffitied across a boarded-up restaurant like a desperate plea. The year before that, I’d shared the waves with crowds of adventure tourists from around the world. Now I paddled out with just a couple of locals. The message was clear: Nicaraguans needed foreign surfers—and their tourism dollars—to return. During the previous decade, the country had pushed aside its war-torn reputation, acquired in the 1970s and ’80s, and was touted as the next “it” destination for adventure travelers. Then, in April 2018, president Daniel Ortega ordered police to silence peaceful urban protests over social-security cuts. Reports of deaths and violence made international headlines, and Nicaragua’s tourism boom went bust almost overnight. By early 2019, the U.S. State…

IN THE WAKE OF SHELLEY

IN THE WAKE OF SHELLEY

In June 1822 three sailors set out from Livorno on the Tuscan coast of Italy and headed for their home port of Lerici, some 36nm up the coast in a 29ft yacht. The weather was hot and thundery, the boat was heavily canvassed and open with no deck. She was seen heading north at a good clip before disappearing from sight as she sailed into the murk of a thundery shower that passed to the north of the town. The crew were never seen alive again. This brutal little vignette was played out in the great days of sail with monotonous regularity. Death was a simple fact of, well, life. What makes the story stand out was that among the crew was the poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Indeed, he was…

THE CATSKILLS ARE CALLING

BEFORE MY VISIT to Wildflower Farms, a new resort in the Catskill Mountains, I had only ever seen one American kestrel. It was two years ago, while driving past an open field in upstate New York, and I had screeched to a halt to get a closer look—only for the bird to fly from its fence post in an instant. But on my first morning at Wildflower Farms, I spotted North America’s smallest raptor perched on a pole a mere 30 feet from the main building. It held still long enough for me to get a good look through my binoculars, as if it had been placed there by guest services. Later that day I would glimpse a bald eagle and one of its young swooping out of their nest…

On May 4, Zendaya and Tom Holland kept it casual as they enjoyed a rare date night to watch an NBA playoff game in San Francisco. The secret to their success is keeping things low-key. “They’ve seen so many people in Hollywood not make it because of too much pressure and attention, and they want to avoid making that mistake,” a source tells Us of the actors, both 26, who’ve been linked since 2017. (They didn’t confirm their romance until 2021.) “After all this time, they still rarely walk the red carpet together. They also don’t share info about their [romance] on social media or talk about each other too much in interviews.” Adds the source, “The goal is to keep the spotlight off their relationship.”…

Almost a month after his health crisis, the actor has yet to disclose any details about his condition, prompting well-wishes and worries among friends and fans. A source close to Foxx’s circle says the star “is stable and not in a life-threatening situation now.” But before the father of daughters Corinne, 29, and Anelise, 14, can be released, doctors “are doing more tests and want to be completely sure…

KATE MOSS HAS BEEN THE FACE OF BRITISH beauty for more than 30 years. As a teen, she fronted Calvin Klein’s iconic Obsession campaign; by her early twenties, she had become our biggest modelling export; and for many years, her ‘London look’ was a powerful influence on a generation of young women’s make-up choices. She brought a cool insouciance to the glamorous gang of Nineties supermodels, becoming synonymous with festival chic and inspiring the ‘bed-head’ look that has arguably kept the dry-shampoo industry in business for decades. At every stage of her career, Moss has been the mistress of her own style. ‘The British beauty aesthetic and culture is all about celebrating and embracing your individuality – it’s what makes someone unique,’ says Moss, speaking to Bazaar from her Cotswolds home.…

A STITCH IN TIME: MAINTAINING YOUR RV

Owning an RV is not all sunsets and happy hours. Maintenance, insurance, repairs, storage, weatherproofing … these are all responsibilities that RV owners must consider, ideally prior to purchase. The Wanderer frequently speaks on these issues, usually with the wisdom and expertise of Editor-at-Large Malcolm Street or the good people at rvSafe. Our readers love a good maintenance tip, particularly if it saves on costs, so we wanted to put it all in one place for easy reference. INSURANCE AND REGISTRATION First, and most importantly, RV owners need to consider their insurance and state and territory registration responsibilities. Registration costs across states and territories and how they each classify RVs in terms of size and weight. Failure to comply with registration regulations may cost you big in the end, in terms…

A multi-award winner, his most recent success was winning the Wildflower Landscapes category of the International Garden Photographer of the Year. See www.markbauerphotography.com and @markbauerphotography on Facebook and Instagram. One of the joys of spring is watching the landscape come back to life as wildflowers begin to bloom: bluebells and wild garlic in woodlands, cow parsley on the verges, and swathes of pink thrift across cliff tops. As the season progresses and turns into summer, these sights are replaced by fields of red as poppies spring up on agricultural land, and later in the summer, carpets of purples across heathland as heather reaches its peak. All of these make great subjects for landscape photography. Head to the woods In early…

Surprising secret to deeper sleep

✓ Snack on popcorn Cuing up a rom-com after dinner? Pop some fiber-rich popcorn to go with it, and you’ll cut your heartburn risk with every bite. A study in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found getting at least 20 grams of fiber daily reduces your acid reflux risk 57%. The nutrient absorbs liquid in the digestive tract, preventing the displacement of stomach acid. Other picks high in fiber: pears, berries, chickpeas and almonds. ✓ Grab an extra pillow To block reflux, tuck a spare pillow under your head before bed. Australian scientists found elevating your head keeps stomach acid from rising into the throat while you’re lying down. The posture shift is so effective, it reduced acid creeping up into the esophagus by as much as 42% and cut reflux symptoms by…

Everything is working out for me “Everything Repeat this six-word mantra daily and you’ll see your life improve — it’s worked for me. This is one of my favourite mantras and lately I’ve been in the habit of saying it daily, which is making a big difference to my mood and how my day goes. Mantras are powerful tools that have been used in various spiritual and cultural traditions for thousands of years. These repetitive words or sounds have a profound effect on the mind and body, and help you to have greater focus, inner peace, and spiritual enlightenment. One of the main reasons why mantras work is because they help to quiet the mind. The mind is constantly bombarded with thoughts, emotions, and distractions, which can make it difficult…

A Taste of King: A Life

On his first night in Chicago, King held an open house, inviting neighbors to visit. He talked for a long time with six members of a local gang, the Vice Lords, about Gandhi and the concept of peaceful protest. Everyone, including King, sat on the floor. “We would say, ‘We respect what you’re saying, but if someone hits me, I’m going to hit him back,’ ” recalled Lawrence Johnson, one of the Vice Lords. King argued that the gang members would never win that way. The police would always have more power. “Hearing this, seeing him, being young, living in a depressive life in America, you couldn’t help but to fall in love with him,” Johnson said. Despite the admonishment, the Vice Lords believed there was at least one thing they…

IRREGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULES CAN POSE HEALTH RISKS

FROM HOSPITAL staff and emergency responders to service-industry employees, shift workers make up about one-fifth of the U.S. workforce. While some might argue that some work outside the bounds of 9:00 to 5:00 is a necessity in modern society, these night-shift and swing-shift schedules aren’t just a benign inconvenience — research shows that shift work is associated with a host of health concerns. Reducing those risks could benefit millions of working adults. THESE HEALTH consequences can manifest in a variety of ways. “Working irregular or night shifts generally translates into also having irregular sleep patterns and getting light exposure at night, which can suppress the body’s natural production of melatonin,” says Sabra Abbott, sleep medicine specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Melatonin is crucial in sleep regulation; its suppression meddles with the body’s…

It’s a warm summer evening in Gray, Maine, and Caswell Farm & Wedding Barn (caswellfarmmaine.com) is alive with the sounds of revelry. “We host up to 28 weddings a year,” says owner Catherine Caswell. “It’s an honor to bring people together to celebrate.” Throwing parties wasn’t always in Catherine’s plans. Raised in Upstate New York, she spent her childhood visiting her grandparents on this 50-acre property. After graduating from college with an environmental science degree, she moved to Juneau, Alaska, to work in the fishing industry until fate intervened in 1996. “My dad called to say he was selling the family farm,” she says. “I immediately said I wanted to buy it, even though I had no experience, and soon found myself growing vegetables for nearby restaurants.” At the end of each…

I’M NOT WEARING anything special, certainly not whatever stereotypical image the word “hula” might arouse; there are no grass skirts or coconut bikinis here. In this hula class we’re not swinging our hips, just moving our arms and clapping wooden batons together. As the kid who could never master rubbing their tummy while patting their head, I am failing to keep up. I won’t remember the moves in 30 seconds. But I will retain a much deeper lesson. Tourism is Hawaiʻi’s largest industry. In 2019 it brought 10 million visitors to the islands, supporting 216,000 jobs and generating $17.75 billion (and raising $2 billion in state taxes). More than half of those visitors spent time on Oʻahu, the most visited island, overtaxing the local environment and, critics say, depleting the quality…

Kendall Jenner & Bad Bunny ‘Getting More Serious’

Months after reports surfaced that Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny are dating, the two had dinner at Carbone in New York City on April 29. “It was a slow start, but they spend almost every day together now,” says a source. “They are getting more serious. Kendall is not seeing anyone else. She really likes him.” The model, 27, and the Grammy winner, 29, first sparked dating rumors after they exited a Los Angeles restaurant together in late February. They were then photographed on a horseback-riding date in L.A. on April 2 before hitting Coachella together for Bad Bunny’s sets last month. “Kendall is happy,” says the source, who adds that the couple met via mutual friends after Bad Bunny moved to L.A. “He is a fun guy. The Anti-Uber

A gun convinced Markus Villig that he was in the wrong business. It was 2015, and the then-21-year-old founder of Bolt was in Belgrade, Serbia, pitching a local taxicab capo on using his app as a digital dispatcher for drivers. The revolver casually left on the boss’s desk sent a clear message: These were rough customers in a brutal business. Villig, who had cofounded Bolt with his older brother Martin two years earlier, was suddenly sure he wanted nothing to do with them. “These were not very nice people to try to do business with,” he recalls. Rather than working with traditional taxi companies, Villig decided to go directly to drivers and riders. That path put Estonia-based Bolt, which had just $2 million in funding, into direct competition with Uber, which…

AUTHENTICITY AT WORK: BE HONEST, IS IT A GOOD THING?

AUTHENTICITY AT WORK: BE HONEST, IS IT A GOOD THING?

Many people say they value authenticity at work. They want to be themselves and express their real emotions. And they want all others to do likewise, particularly their boss and colleagues. The word “authentic” implies that one always gives a faithful, honest, and accurate account of personal beliefs, preferences, and desires. It means genuine, bona fide, and honest, while the antonym implies dodgy, dishonest, and insincere. We are told by the gurus that “authentic” leaders have all sorts of virtues: they tend to be more self-aware, more disciplined and inspiring, and more liked and trusted by all stakeholders. Thoroughly good egg; very desirable type. Being authentic with others always and everywhere seems like a good idea, even a fundamental right. But is this possible in business, particularly the service industry? What if you…

Serbia acted after two mass shootings – yet the US still does nothing

Earlier this month, Serbia experienced two separate mass shootings that killed more than a dozen people, including children. Serbia, a nation tied for the third highest rate of gun ownership in the world, was shaken by this violence: mass shootings are not a daily occurrence. It did not take long for the president, Aleksandar Vučić, to take action, announcing several measures to prevent further tragedy. These include a ban on new gun permits, tougher penalties for illegal weapons possession, psychological checks of gun owners and an amnesty for the surrender of illegal weapons. It only took two days for Serbia to act. Why, after more than 200 mass shootings in 2023 alone, has the United States failed to take similar sweeping action? Day after day, the US experiences senseless gun violence and yet…

Don’t use public phone chargers, FBI warns

The airport, the bar, the library—all places where your hard-working smartphone might need a little pick-me-up, and all places where free, public phone charging stations have been cropping up over the last few years. But according to a warning from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, you might be better off letting your constant companion run down to zero. A tweet from the FBI’s Denver field office (via CNBC) warns that “bad actors” have been infiltrating public recharging stations in order to load up spyware and malware on smartphones through the USB port. For hackers, getting instant physical, wired access to a device is basically the Holy Grail of information security…and the defeat thereof. It’s a technique informally known as “juice jacking,” something the FBI’s central website and various field offices…

@JORDANFARLEY THREE NEW MOVIES Despite thriving on streaming, Star Wars is experiencing a fallow period on the big screen. All that is set to change with three freshly announced movies delving into the past, present and future of a new ‘mythological timeline’. First up (chronologically, anyway): James Mangold will direct a movie exploring the ‘dawn of the Jedi’. Set 25,000 years before the original trilogy it will ‘tell the tale of the first Jedi to wield the Force’, according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. For Mangold the idea was to resurrect a long-dormant genre, and give it a Star Wars twist. ‘I thought about the biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments,’ Mangold said. ‘Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it?’ Another new…

Missouri is one of 32 states to have introduced this kind of legislation, because I guess that’s how you fight inflation. I’m just going to say it, cancel me if you must: I am in full support of my home state’s Don’t Say Gay bill and the dozens of others like it. Don’t Say Gay? I say, “Yay.” Because I must assume these bills will increase penalties for kids who say “faggot”…

MICHAEL DOUGLAS TRIBUTE IS A FAMILY AFFAIR THE 76TH CANNES FILM FESTIVAL THE LEGEND AND HIS LEADING LADIES REIGN ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA

Flanked by his two leading ladies, Michael Douglas cuts a dashing figure on the red carpet at the Cannes film festival. The veteran of screen and stage was accompanied by his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and their 20-year-old daughter Carys, who was making her debut at the French movie extravaganza. In a pink Elie Saab gown, the aspiring musician posed with her parents at the opening night gala as she and her equally glamorous mum Catherine – also in a dramatic gown by Elie Saab – planted a kiss on Michael’s cheek before the Fatal Attraction star, 77, received a special award honouring his lifetime in film. “Thank you Cannes!” he later wrote on Instagram. “I am so honoured to receive the honorary Palme d’Or for my career achievements. The world’s oldest brain found in tiny marine creature

The world’s oldest brain found in tiny marine creature

EVOLUTION A tiny marine creature less than 1.5cm long could rewrite the story ofhow brains developed, and help to settle a long-term disagreement. So claim the scientists who examined 525-million-year-old fossils found in China and discovered what they think is the world’s oldest sample of brain tissue. The fossils include the remains of a worm-like arthropod, Cardiodictyon catenulum, embedded in rock from Yunnan province in South-Eastern China. With a length of 1.5cm, the fossil was too small to examine with X-rays, so the scientists instead used a special imaging technique that filters light of different wavelengths, mapping the structure of the fossil. The surprise was to find that the brain of the tiny ancient creature that roamed the ocean floor so long ago had been conserved, and that it was comprised of…

Whisky and Malting

Whisky and Malting

Malted grains are a key ingredient in whisky making. Whether used as the primary grain or as a supplemental ingredient to aid in fermentation, malted (or sprouted) grains provide a wellspring of fermentable sugars. The history of malting stretches back to ancient Egyptian brewing culture. In Scotland, the use of malted grains in distilling dates back to at least 1494, when the first mention of barley malt appears in tax records. Malting Their Own While in-house malting floors were the norm before the rise of independent maltsters, some distilleries—including Laphroaig and Bowmore on Islay, and Balvenie in Speyside—have their own malting floors. Malt Shops Globally, Boortmalt is the largest provider of malted grains, with two plants in Scotland. Diageo’s Port Ellen on Islay and Glen Ord in Muir of Ord, among other malting plants,…

Mountainscapes

These are my favourite landscapes, often shot on challenging terrain and in unpredictable weather, with variable but potentially exciting lighting conditions. Opportunities range from shooting at elevation for wide-open views to ground level to include a mountainous backdrop to a foreground feature. Weather conditions can change and happen very quickly in the mountains, so always stay alert, and handhold your Nikon where possible, which allows for speed and flexibility, as well as the ability to travel light. 1 WAIT FOR PASSING SHOWERS Mountain landscapes are known for their rapidly changing weather. One of the most striking effects in the mountains can be achieved with passing heavy showers, backlit with sunlight from above. This creates an attractive translucent light effect emerging through the rain. Look for a weather forecast of ‘frequent heavy showers’…

CRISTIANO OF ARABIA

More than 27,000 people were on their feet in Mecca, shouting “Siuuu!” at the top of their voices, as Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his fourth goal of the game in trademark fashion. Al-Nassr were 4-0 up at relegation battlers Al-Wehda, but the home side’s fans didn’t seem all that bothered that they were on the receiving end of a tonking. CR7 was the unquestionable star. In their previous home match at the King Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium a fortnight earlier, Al-Wehda had lost 2-0 to Al-Fateh in front of a crowd of only 2,455. The holy city welcomes around a million visitors each year for Islam’s famous Hajj pilgrimage, but this time people had come to worship Ronaldo. In bagging the 61st hat-trick of his career to put Al-Nassr in total…

Cutting back on ultra-processed foods may help keep cancer at bay, per a study of nearly 200,000 adults. Every 10% increase in consumption of ultra-processed food was associated with a 2% greater chance of developing any of 34 cancers analyzed. Clues that a packaged product is ultra-processed: The nutrition label contains lots of hard-to-pronounce ingredients and things you wouldn’t use in a home kitchen, like high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. You can also think about how far the food has come from its original form—for instance, corn is minimally processed, canned corn is processed, and corn chips are ultra-processed. You don’t have to give up your favorite chips and guac completely—just enjoy them in moderation.…

IN BRIEF What Small, private urban garden. Where West London. Size A rectangle of around 150 square metres (including a 25m-square basement courtyard). Soil London clay soil enriched with good-quality topsoil. Climate Temperate and south-facing. Hardiness zone ISDA 9. In the garden of this charming, stucco-fronted villa in London's fashionable Notting Hill, garden designer Butter Wakefield has combined her passions for design detail, sustainability and storied planting. The house was remodelled by architects Michaelis Boyd for a couple relocating from the USA, along with their four young children. The renovations included a basement extension for a new swimming pool, and so the first two-thirds of the plot were “a void” with a blank canvas of lawn in the rear section. What the garden did have, unusually for London, were two matching, attractive, old…

Work Life Balance

When architect Noam Hazan purchased a 1950s red-brick bungalow in a North Toronto neighbourhood, it looked like it hadn’t ever been renovated. He lived there for seven months with his wife Eden and two children, Benson, 6, and Bailey, 4, before embarking on the project. After a few touch-ups, and a concerted effort to remove some mid-century mustiness, the British-born architect knew this true relic carried the potential to realize his dream home and course-correct his trajectory. “I started it whilst running an automated retail start-up,” recalls Hazan, who took a two-year hiatus from the architecture industry. “I knew I wanted to pivot back to architecture, and I wanted this to be the standout show home for potential future clients.” With an affinity for Modernist design, strongly influenced by his early…

NEXT GEN ROYALS

Although the newly-minted monarchs took pride of place at the ceremony, those born to rule in the future managed to steal the spotlight on several occasions. The Prince and Princess of Wales were standouts on the day, with their three children – Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 – melting hearts across the globe. Kate looked positively regal in an ivory Alexander McQueen silk crepe gown, embroidered with the national flora of the United Kingdom. The 41-year-old opted not to wear a tiara for the historic occasion, instead donning a silver bullion and crystal headpiece by British milliner Jess Collett. Charlotte coordinated with her mum in a matching dress and headpiece. And although George played a key role in the Coronation – as a Page of Honour to…

Should Your Start-up Be For-Profit or Nonprofit?

ABOUT THE ART The collage artist Mark Wagner uses deconstructed U.S. dollars to create intricate works of art. THERE ONCE WAS A time when “start-up” clearly referred to a new venture that sold a product, looked for investors, and aimed to turn a profit. A nonprofit was a completely different kind of enterprise—one that was funded through the largesse of donors, gave away its offerings, and had relatively few similarities to a traditional business. In recent decades those lines have blurred. Many nonprofits now provide products or services that compete with those of the best for-profit companies. Meanwhile, for-profit start-ups, often backed by “impact investors” who care about more than financial returns, can do as much good as traditional charities. As a result, when a socially minded entrepreneur starts an enterprise today,…

Paoletti has been crafting unique guitars in Tuscany since 2005. Its founder, Fabrizio Paoletti, has a background in electrical engineering and automation, shares Filippo Martini, Paoletti’s managing director. “Guitar was a passion for him and still is today,” Filippo says. “That passion is also for the guitar as an instrument – its components, the way it plays, its sound; it fascinated him.” Fabrizio started small, but now Paoletti’s operations are housed in a sizable modern three-storey building. “Where we are now – in the middle of Tuscany, very close to Florence – isn’t where the company was established,” says Filippo. “This is the third headquarters of Paoletti Guitars. The first one was like a garage; the second one was three times a garage,” he laughs. “We moved here about a…

Bear attacks: the frightening side of rewilding

She was caught, “finally”, after they spotted paw prints in fresh snow, said Giampaolo Visetti in La Repubblica (Rome). Teams of forest rangers in the Alpine region of Italy had been hunting down a brown bear named JJ4 ever since she attacked and killed 26-year-old Andrea Papi as he jogged through the forest early last month. But her capture, on 18 April, marked the start of another saga, one that pits the provincial government against animal rights groups. The former issued a catch-and-kill order, but the latter have launched a court challenge against it. A final decision is expected on 11 May. The cruel irony of all this, said Tristan Kennedy in Wired, is that “were it not for a 25-year-old rewilding programme”, JJ4 would not have been in the Trentino…

‘Traitors, disloyal and UNGRATEFUL’

The coronation is done and dusted, the family jewels have been packed away and now it’s time for King Charles to get on with his reign. But whether our new monarch is remembered for more than the family drama that has surrounded his early days, remains to be seen. And according to one expert, there is one vital thing that Charles, 74, needs to do in order to tip the scales in his favour: ‘banish’ his younger son, Prince Harry, and his wife Meghan, completely. Woman has previously reported the effort Charles has put in to try and heal the rift with Harry; offering a major olive branch in inviting him and his family to the coronation, despite the truth bombs he and Meghan have frequently fired at his family. For English football, Jamal Musiala is that person. The 20-year-old, born in Stuttgart to a British Nigerian father and a German mother, but raised on England’s shores between the ages of seven and 16, looked destined to represent the Three Lions on the world stage – only to choose a different path. FourFourTwo has flown to Bavaria to learn first-hand how this young talent, considered among the brightest in Europe, fell through England’s net. Wearing a baggy green hoodie and Crocs without socks, Musiala bounces into our interview at Bayern Munich’s dazzling training complex. “Hey there, how’s it going?” he asks, beaming.…

Jess: Straight up: be honest about how you feel. And nowish. The best way not to ghost is not to ghost. Becky: I think how you do it depends on how long you've been seeing her, too. A few weeks? A nice text or phone call is fine. A few months? Definitely in person. Jess: I think technology makes it easy for people to be dickheads. The easy option is just to block someone – to avoid the awkwardness. But I think you owe this person a conversation. Becky: And give her…

An artificial sweetener may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke

An artificial sweetener may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke

A popular zero-calorie sweetener is being linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Known as erythritol, the sugar substitute occurs naturally at low levels in some plants, like grapes and mushrooms, but is also produced industrially and added to food at higher concentrations. In particular, it’s often used to sweeten low-calorie, low-carbohydrate and ‘keto’ products, which are typically high-fat and low-carbohydrate. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio evaluated more than 4,000 Americans and Europeans who were undergoing cardiac evaluation and found that those with the highest blood concentration of the artificial sweetener were at an increased risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke in the following three years. Notably, the majority of the participants already had some form of cardiovascular disease or exhibited risk factors for…

Return to Office

Reports of the office tower’s death have been greatly exaggerated. We dispatched documentary photographer Jon Laytner, known for his candid slice-of-life images, to a new generation of corporate headquarters whose success will prove critical to the future of the downtown business district as we know it. What he found was something strangely familiar: desks — ones with people doing actual, focused work at them. Of course, in a modern business environment, desks are just part of the equation, rounded out by dynamic social areas (like the fourth-floor tenant lounge that Gensler designed for CIBC Square, below) or calming wellness amenities (see: the Vitamin D light therapy and sound therapy rooms that HOK envisioned for Boston Consulting Group). But if you thought the individual workstation was destined to disappear altogether, replaced by laid-back…

ROYALTY AND DIGNITARIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD ATTEND GLITTERING PARTY AT THE PALACE HIS MAJESTY, HAPPY AND RELAXED, HOSTS RECEPTION

The King welcomed royals and dignitaries from around the world to Buckingham Palace for a glittering reception the night before his coronation. Joined by the Prince and Princess of Wales, as well as the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, His Majesty mingled with guests in the ornate state rooms, hours before they would all gather inside Westminster Abbey again for the ceremony. Seemingly undaunted by what lay ahead the next day, the King looked happy and relaxed as he chatted and laughed with fellow royals, including Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Now that I’ve stopped popping a little pill every day, I’m learning that while I may have skipped some of the not-so-fun aspects of a regular cycle (cramps and bloating, anyone?), I also didn’t get to experience the powerful parts, like bursts of energy and strength. I also never learned how to support my body through its various shifts. With periods making a consistent appearance again, I want to do all I can to have as pleasant an experience as possible. Queen Cleopatra: the casting is not the problem with Netflix’s docudrama

Netflix’s drama-documentary made headlines last month when the Egyptian government denounced it as a “historical fallacy”, because the show insists that Cleopatra was black, said Anita Singh in The Daily Telegraph. No one knows what colour Cleopatra’s skin was, but she is widely believed to have been of Greek-Macedonian descent. So what evidence has the series got to support its theory? Well, it mainly relies on the work of the American academic Shelley Haley who, in the first episode, recalls her grandmother telling her: “I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black.” And that is that really. As for the rest of the series, it mixes talking heads with historical reconstruction, to explain why Cleopatra “was such a significant figure”. It does that well enough, but ultimately…

10 AWESOMELY PRACTICAL TASKS YOU CAN DO WITH CHATGPT

ChatGPT, a powerful language model chatbot developed by OpenAI, has revolutionized the way we interact with artificial intelligence. With its advanced natural language processing capabilities, ChatGPT can help you with a wide range of tasks, from answering trivia questions to composing poetry. Here are 10 wonderfully fun, awesomely practical ways to put ChatGPT to work. 1. CREATE FUN RECIPES One interesting thing ChatGPT can do is generate recipes based on user preferences, ingredients, or specific dietary requirements. Give it a starting point by providing certain information about the desired dish, such as the type of cuisine, the main ingredients you want to use, or any dietary restrictions you may have. ChatGPT will then provide a recipe with step-by-step instructions, ingredient quantities, and cooking tips. I asked ChatGPT to create a whiskey-based cocktail using a…

PWC-SPECIFIC LIFE JACKETS

Wearing a life jacket is a smart choice for any boater but mandatory for all personal watercraft riders. Coast Guard-approved Type III models work best. The vest-style design is easy to take on and off, comfortable, and available in a wide variety of colors and graphic patterns. But while a basic Type III life jacket will always do the job, the latest crop of PWC-specific models do it better, tailoring design and features to the way individual riders use their craft. Here’s how they compare. RECREATIONAL The average recreational rider will be well-served by the classic ski vest, a sleeveless, front-entry design that closes with buckled straps or a straps-and-zipper combo. A nylon or neoprene exterior typically covers flotation foam for comfort and to protect the foam from wear and sun…

But this was a whole other level,” she tells WHO. “It was every day. The day after she posted, Corinne, 29, along with Foxx’s younger daughter Annalise, 13, and Annalise’s mother, Kristin Grannis, were photographed in Chicago. The positive news continued on May 15 when the Fox network announced that the actor and Corinne will cohost the new game show We Are Family, which is set to debut in 2024. “He has a lot of projects going on,” says a source. “He gets things done.” CHRIS DELMAS/AFP/GETTY IMAGES; FOX…

The secret power of ‘less is more’

As you unfurl your long to-do list, you instantly feel overwhelmed. And with all of your unanswered emails and endless responsibilities, you worry it would take weeks on a tropical island to ease your stress. While it’s easy to think “more is better” when it comes to relieving stress—that you need to devote ample time to anxiety-busting strategies—research suggests the brain can dial down tension and boost bliss in mere minutes. “Rather than making an unrealistic time commitment to stress relief, focusing on little adjustments throughout the day enhances our well-being the fastest, according to neuroscience,” confirms psychotherapist Heidi Schreiber-Pan, Ph.D., author of Breaking the Anxiety Cycle. Another perk of mini stressbusters is they reduce the hidden pressure women tend to put on themselves to relax in specific, culturally prescribed ways, adds…

”History is currently being used for political purposes that have very little to do with the past”

What, in your view, are the aims of History Reclaimed? My take is that it’s a project exploring the ‘culture wars’ that are going on, and how history fits within them. It seems to me that history is currently being used for political purposes that have very little to do with the past. One of the aims of History Reclaimed is to reclaim history from that abuse. Do you see History Reclaimed as being part of a wider movement? I think it’s part of a reaction to the way in which academia, particularly, has seen a trend towards - in simple terms - a ‘woke’ approach to history. This approach encourages academics and students to conform to a stereotypical view of the west as exploitative and culturally dominating, and I think it is…

I was an Irish eight-year-old at an international school in Singapore, and before I ate lunch with Naoko, my new friend from Tokyo, I was happy with my wholemeal bread sandwiches, wedged alongside an apple inside a rectangular Friends of the Earth lunchbox. I unwrapped my squashed sandwiches from their foil, and Naoko deftly unclipped the lid of her Hello Kitty lunchbox, revealing various perfectly proportioned compartments containing tiny immaculately presented portions of food: steamed rice, tuna, cooked vegetables, purple and yellow pickles. A matching pair of pink chopsticks slotted neatly into the lid of the box. I’d never seen such state-of-the-art lunchbox technology. I’d never seen a lunchbox aspire to such soaring…

We’re about to see what the Mac can do when it’s finally set free

We’re about to see what the Mac can do when it’s finally set free

The release of the M1 processor was a milestone. Apple finally migrated the Mac to its fast, low-power mobile processors, and the results were incredible. They were a hard act to follow—and after about a year and a half, the M2 processor arrived with a (not unexpected) set of incremental gains. You can’t reinvent the wheel every time out, and clearly the M2 was a careful follow-on to the M1, designed to keep the ball rolling. But now reports abound that the M3 is on the way—not at the end of the year or in early 2024, as you might expect from the 18-month gap between the M1 and the M2, but very soon, perhaps as soon as late spring or early summer. Surprise! It turns out that Apple may be more…

Material Thinking

Five Mile Radius is an architecture studio that has always been about more than just design projects. Founded in Brisbane by a group of young graduates including Clare Kennedy, Hunter Eccleston and Tom O'Shea, the practice began with a mission to advocate, educate, make and design. “More as a workshop for making than a traditional architecture studio,” Clare says. With an interest in natural, local and recycled materials, Five Mile Radius now manufactures and sells furniture. The first ranges are tables made from crushed construction waste terrazzo, and stools made from reclaimed blackened timber. This has helped to diversify the income streams for the business and has necessitated the hiring of a more diversely skilled team. Now, alongside the original three, the studio employs Jack Hamilton (fabrication) and Ellie Farrington (carpentry),…

THE SECRETARY WON’T SEE YOU NOW

Churchill said that the Soviet Union was a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. If we were to turn the lens on the British establishment, the enigma would be the monarchy; the mystery would be the family members; and the riddle — well, that would be the courtier. The courtier’s job every day is to be hidden in plain sight, always by the monarch’s side but never noticeable. They must be impeccable in a way that an average civil servant need not be. Many use the same tailor as their charges, and the very best require adequate lapel support for the array of gongs, honours and metaphorical respect bestowed upon them (Christopher Geidt was knighted three times). Courtiers needn’t worry about a social life. Royal service demands round-the-clock attendance…

TOM CRUISE AND SHAKIRA PUT THE BRAKES ON ROMANCE RUMOURS AFTER THE MIAMI GRAND PRIX

If Tom Cruise felt “the need – the need for speed”, he was in the right place. romance? Perhaps not. Photos of the Top Gun star chatting animatedly with Shakira, 46, at the Miami Grand Prix (left) put his fans in a spin, with one US news outlet saying Tom, 60, was “extremely interested in pursuing” the Colombian singer and even sent her flowers. Rather than fuelling the rumours, however, Shakira made it clear it was cars, not hearts, that were racing on the day. “Shakira had a great time hanging out with Tom, but she has no interest in dating him,” an insider said. “She had a fun time when they chatted, but that’s as far as things have gone.” Since Shakira’s 11-year relationship with former footballer Gerard Piqué ended last summer, she…

Explore the 10 nearest stars

IF YOU WANT TO STUDY THE STARS, there’s no better place to start than close to home. After all, the nearest star is just 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) away: the Sun. Its daily presence and predictable motions through the sky may make it seem like a boring, steady companion. But up close, it’s an incendiary tempest of roiling plasma, erupting with brilliant solar flares and mottled by darker sunspots — not to mention it’s the only star known (so far) to host a planetary system that includes an inhabited world. An estimated 200 billion trillion or so stars fill the known cosmos, but nearby stars attract a lot of attention from astronomers. “We are somehow attached naturally to things that are close by, to finding out what’s going on…

Gilf Kebir: Images From the Sahara’s Greener Past

Gilf Kebir: Images From the Sahara’s Greener Past

In 1930, when Egypt was under the military occupation of Great Britain, a group of mostly British officers, cartographers, and surveyors met in the Sudanese village of Wadi Halfa to share their exploits over some cold beer. During the previous decade, a series of expeditions into the vast and forbidding Libyan Desert had found oases previously unexplored by Europeans, mapping them for the first time. Only the legendary Zerzura oasis remained unidentified. The gathered explorers agreed to form the Zerzura Club in honor of their quest for the elusive “oasis of the little birds,” from the Arabic zarzar, for starling or sparrow. Zerzura was first mentioned as an abandoned village by a 13th-century provincial administrator. It next appears in the 15th-century Book of Hidden Pearls, which locates it in a wadi (a…

How Your Problems Affect Your Pets

How Your Problems Affect Your Pets

How obesity, disruptive home environments, smoking and depression could be damaging your pet, and how you can help them. OBESITY Being obese has an obvious negative impact on pets. Due to shared lifestyles, it’s common for an overweight owner to raise an overweight pet. Excess weight carried by cats and dogs places too much demand on vital organs. This can lead to disease and serious health risks including diabetes, joint and ligament damage, heart disease, difficulty breathing and decreased stamina. Unfortunately, if the animal needs treatment for obesity-related complications, they will have increased surgical and anaesthetic risks, and may not be given the go ahead until they have lost weight. It is therefore vital to make sure your pet is being fed the recommended daily nutritional allowance, and given enough exercise for their particular…

12 Android settings that will strengthen your security

ANDROID SECURITY You might not know it from all the panic-inducing headlines out there, but Android is packed with practical and powerful security options. Some are activated by default, while others are more out of the way but equally deserving of your attention. Over the following pages, we look through Android's settings, ranging from core system-level elements to some more advanced and overlooked options. 1. APP PERMISSIONS A rarely spoken reality of Android security is that your own negligence - either in failing to properly secure your device in some way or in leaving open too many windows that allow third-party apps access to your personal details - is far more likely to be problematic than any manner of malware. So let's address the first part of that right off…

Found: New ways to prevent skin cancer

For decades, we’ve been told to don long sleeves, seek the shade and slather on sunscreen to ward off skin cancer. The problem? New research in the journal Healthcare shows the first two strategies, which work wonders to prevent skin aging, aren’t as effective at warding off cancer. And while sunscreen is still the gold standard for preventing skin aging and cancer, research shows 75% of products contain ineffective ingredients. Plus, we tend to miss key spots when applying it. A British study finds that 77% of us miss the area between the inner eye and the nose. “We also tend to overlook the ears and eyelids,” says David J. Leffell, M.D., chief of the skin cancer and melanoma unit at Yale, who sees many cancers there as a result. To…

Stupid Birds!

Stupid Birds!

WAKE-UP CALL Any turkey that I can trick into gun range is, by definition, stupid. That’s true now, and it was truer years ago, when my law-student friend asked me to guide him to his first turkey. Seeking my help was Cody’s second bad decision of the spring. Turkey hunting while trying to pass the bar was the first. On opening morning, I picked Cody up at 4 a.m. He’d been studying all night. Along with his turkey-hunting gear, he brought a stack of index cards covered with case law and Latin to read by dome light while I drove us to the public-land reservoir. If turkeys gobbled at all on that cold, windy morning, we couldn’t hear them. Blind calling along a series of field edges seemed like the best course. After…

Apple set to make MR a reality

Apple set to make MR a reality

Over the past few years, countless millions of words have been written about augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). For a time, it seemed that the technologies could be about to change the world, with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg seemingly going all in, renaming his company Meta after the so-called Metaverse, and launching a mixed reality (MR) headset aimed at businesses. More recently, it has felt more like a VR winter as Silicon Valley abandoned its grand plans. Microsoft, which launched its own pioneering HoloLens headset, has apparently laid off several of the teams working on it, and in March Google finally killed Google Glass, the company’s early attempt at getting into mixed reality. Even Meta is thought to be quietly backing away from the Metaverse, instead putting its more…

LET’S GET LOUD

LET’S GET LOUD

An exercise in letting go—that’s how the designer Leah Ring describes her Yucca Valley, California, home, a secondary residence she shares with her husband, the artist Adam de Boer. De Boer, in fact, proposed on the property, though one year and a renovation later, a rogue sandstorm blew through on the day of the nuptials, a fitting welcome to desert life if ever there was one. Ring—whose six-year-old Los Angeles–based studio, Another Human, works across residential and commercial interiors and product design—finds ample inspiration off the beaten (and sometimes brambly) path. Having studied under ELLE DECOR A-List designer Frances Merrill of Reath Design, she was well equipped to spot the potential in the compound, an atypical if otherwise unremarkable arrangement of four buildings just outside Joshua Tree National Park. “I didn’t want…

HAUNTED BY CHARLES’ EXES!

HAUNTED BY CHARLES’ EXES!

With Queen Camilla now firmly settled on the throne, you’d think she’d finally have a sense of security. But behind those coronation smiles, she can’t shake the feeling that no-one, except her husband, wanted her crowned, with a line-up of contenders considered far more suitable. “I don’t believe Camilla ever wanted this for herself either,” royal author Phil Dampier tells New Idea exclusively. “For many, she will always be the woman who ruined the King’s marriage to Princess Diana. Camilla knows that’s how some people feel, but there is nothing she can do about it.” We will never truly know if the late ‘People’s Princess’ had the mettle to rule, but one thing is for certain – Diana would have been an extremely popular choice in Britain and the Commonwealth. Sadly, her strong…

Carbon dioxide removal The tech that’s dividing climate scien tists

Carbon dioxide removal The tech that’s dividing climate scien tists

For some scientists, they are the inevitable next stage of staving off the existential threat of climate chaos. For others, they should not even be talked about. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, which provide a means of sucking carbon out of the atmosphere, are one of the hottest, and most controversial, areas of climate research. The debate over whether and how to develop CDR has been ignited by the release in March of the final section of the comprehensive review of climate science by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report found that ways of capturing and storing carbon dioxide, though expensive, may play a role in trying to keep global temperatures within safe bounds. But scientists and policymakers are divided. Some say the technology must be the priority for research.…

As Birth Rates Decline, Students Get a Leg Up

Nathan Grawe is a professor of economics at Carleton College, in Northfield, Minn., and author of Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education and The Agile College. What demographic shifts are occurring in the U.S. population? In a longstanding trend, we’ve seen a reshaping of our population’s composition. Geographically, we see young families moving out of the Northeast, and to some degree off of the West Coast, and moving toward the South and South-Central U.S. We’re also seeing differences in fertility across races and ethnicity groups, and the share of the population that is non-Hispanic white has been declining. For colleges and universities, this has been proceeding at a faster clip than in the population at large because younger generations are more diverse. More recently, a decline in fertility that…
